When Childhood Begins to Fade
Have you ever paused to look closely at a child’s drawing? Every splash of colour and every playful sketch tells a story that words often cannot—a story of dreams, imagination, curiosity, fears and quiet hopes. But for many vulnerable children, those vibrant colours slowly begin to disappear. They get transformed to experiences that are too intense for a child to carry.
Children who experience neglect, family instability, abuse, or prolonged emotional distress often withdraw from the activities they once loved. They become quieter, more isolated, and less willing to engage with the people around them. While the signs may not always be visible, the impact can be serious.
Many such children struggle with emotional trauma and anxiety, making it difficult for them to trust adults and build healthy relationships with their peers. These experiences often lead to social withdrawal, interrupted learning and overall development, while also affecting their self-confidence and ability to express themselves freely.
Without timely support, these experiences can continue to shape how children view themselves and the world around them.
A Child Who Stopped Drawing
Ten-year-old Arjun loved to draw. His notebooks overflowed with colourful sketches of little houses, towering trees, playful animals, and faraway places he dreamed of visiting one day. Hand him a blank sheet of paper, and within moments, his imagination would come alive through his pencil strokes.
But things changed gradually.
The family problems resulted in uncertainty in his surroundings. The joyful boy who once eagerly showed everybody his drawings became more and more closed. He was not interested in any activities, didn’t talk to people and rarely engaged in games with other children.
One day, when asked to draw something he liked, Arjun simply stared at the blank sheet of paper.

The crayons remained unused.
Looking Beyond the Silence
Sahyog, an NGO for Child Rehabilitation, was introduced to Arjun through their community programs. Their task was not only to help a child go back to the normal activities but also to restore his self-confidence.

At Sahyog, we know that the first step of rehabilitation is trust. The rehabilitation programme was designed around Arjun’s individual needs and helped him take small but meaningful steps towards rebuilding his confidence and sense of belonging.
Through its comprehensive rehabilitation programme, Sahyog Care helped Arjun rebuild his life in many ways:
- Confidence-building activities helped Arjun overcome his hesitation and gradually regain belief in his abilities.
- Art sessions gave him the freedom to express his emotions through the drawings he had always loved, helping him rediscover his creativity.
- Group activities encouraged him to interact with other children, form friendships, and become more comfortable in social settings.
- Personalised learning support rekindled his interest in education and helped him progress at his own pace.
- Regular counselling and guidance equipped his family to better support his emotional wellbeing and educational journey at home.
Every small step mattered.
The Return of a Forgotten Smile

Weeks turned into months.
Gradually, Arjun started getting involved in the activities with other kids. He began to talk a lot in group sessions and learned how to express his ideas.
Then, one day, while engaging in an art activity, he picked up a crayon.
It was a very simple drawing: a house under a big, bright sun.
For some people, it would be nothing special.
But for those who knew how far he came, it meant much more. It was a symbol that Arjun started to regain confidence, imagination, and hope.
A boy who once skipped all activities was now urging other kids to join in his play.
Every Child Deserves a Chance to Begin Again
Arjun’s story is an example of how behind every smile of a child, every missed chance and struggle, there is a kid waiting to be noticed, supported and helped. Rehabilitation doesn’t ymean that we try to get children through hardships, it means restoring their confidence, holding hopes high and giving them back freedom to enjoy childhood.
At Sahyog, we take care of child rehabilitation in a way that it helps kids like Arjun to solve their core issues. There are many other children out there like Arjun, who are waiting to get their chance.
