Every morning before school, eleven-year-old Pooja carried a small bottle of water and walked with her friends towards an open field.
It wasn’t a game. It wasn’t a shortcut. It was the only place they could use as a toilet. She dreaded those walks.
During the monsoon, the muddy paths became slippery and unsafe. During summer, the scorching heat made the journey exhausting. As she entered adolescence, the absence of a clean and private toilet became an even bigger concern. On several occasions, she chose to stay home instead of attending school.
Pooja wasn’t losing interest in her education. She was losing access to it.
Across many rural communities, inadequate sanitation continues to affect children’s health, confidence, and attendance in school. For girls especially, the lack of safe sanitation facilities often becomes an invisible reason behind interrupted education.

When Sahyog Care For You began working in rural Delhi and Haryana, sanitation was viewed as more than an infrastructure challenge.
The organisation recognized that something as basic as a clean toilet could influence whether a child remained in school or gradually dropped out.
Through its School Toilet Renovation and Construction Project, Sahyog renovated existing facilities and built safe, hygienic toilets in government schools. Clean sanitation facilities gave students a healthier environment while restoring privacy and dignity that many had never experienced within their schools.
For adolescent girls, the impact was particularly significant. Reliable sanitation facilities meant they could attend classes confidently throughout the year instead of missing school because of inadequate hygiene infrastructure.
Sometimes, the biggest obstacle to education is not inside the classroom. It is just outside it.
A Cleaner Environment Builds Stronger Communities
Sanitation improvement is also an improvement in the space around us. With such a mindset, Sahyog Care For You has renovated a deserted roadside park in the rural area of Gurugram, and has created a space that is now inviting to children, families, and elderly people.
This project also had the feature of roadside plantation and beautification, wherein the creation of new trees and good landscaping made common public spaces much more clean and green.
Though seemingly simple, such efforts make people think differently about the space around them, making them respect it and protect it.
