Beyond the bright colours, smiling faces, and playful sketches lies a world they may not yet have the words to express—a world filled with dreams, fears, curiosity, and hope. But for many vulnerable children, that world slowly fades away.

Children who experience neglect, family instability, abuse, or prolonged emotional distress often withdraw from the activities they once loved. They become quieter, more isolated, and less willing to engage with the people around them. While the signs may not always be visible, the impact can be serious.

Many such children struggle with emotional trauma and anxiety, making it difficult for them to trust adults and build healthy relationships with their peers. These experiences often lead to social withdrawal, interrupted learning and overall development, while also affecting their self-confidence and ability to express themselves freely.

Without timely support, these experiences can continue to shape how children view themselves and the world around them.

A Child Who Stopped Drawing

Ten-year-old Arjun loved to draw. His notebooks overflowed with colourful sketches of little houses, towering trees, playful animals, and faraway places he dreamed of visiting one day. Hand him a blank sheet of paper, and within moments, his imagination would come alive through his pencil strokes.

But things changed gradually.

The family problems resulted in uncertainty in his surroundings. The joyful boy who once eagerly showed everybody his drawings became more and more closed. He was not interested in any activities, didn’t talk to people and rarely engaged in games with other children.

One day, when asked to draw something he liked, Arjun simply stared at the blank sheet of paper.

The crayons remained unused.

Looking Beyond the Silence

Sahyog, an NGO for Child Rehabilitation, was introduced to Arjun through their community programs.
